Sacred SexualityBy Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D.Reviewed by John Gilbert, Ph.D.All of us in a relationship or seeking to be in a relationship know there is a spiritual side to everything in that relationship. One of our purposes for living may be to bring the spiritual into every aspect of our relationships. One of those aspects is, dare I say it? - Sexuality. “Sacred Sexuality” (ISBN 089281126-9) By Georg Feuerstein and published by Inner Traditions is more about spiritually approaching relationships than sexual relations. It’s a book for people wanting to forge a more spiritual relationship and professional coaches, counselors and therapists helping others from meaningful and rewarding relationships. In the Preface, Dr. Feuerstein says: “Sacred sexuality is about recovering our authentic being which knows bliss beyond mere pleasurable sensations. It is a special form of communications, even communion, that fills us with awe and stillness…. Yet we cannot live fully as sexual-erotic beings without first recovering our spiritual depth. Our sexuality can help us get in touch again with that depth; it can serve as a gateway to the spiritual dimension.” This is not a book about sex. It’s a book about sexuality. The author does not teach any new and phenomenal positions. Rather what he does is address the sacred aspect of sex and sexual communion. The author separates this book into three parts. In part one he reviews the sexual wasteland of modern America and current breakthroughs in sex. In part two he discusses sacred sex as a spiritual sacrament through the ages. And, in part three, he discloses the challenge of sacred sex today. Dr. Feuerstein addresses difficult issues in a well-documented, matter-of-fact approach that is both reassuring and encouraging. He’s a veteran author with over thirty titles in print. He believes, and strongly defends, that sexuality is essentially spiritual. What a wonderful world this would be if we all agreed with his assessment and made spiritual sexuality a foundation for our relationships.
